      Major IRA Gift

Warner G. "Buck" Martin '55 attributes his success in life in large part to the great co-op education from GMI, now Kettering University. He met his wife Shirley in the 8th grade and they married during his sophomore year at GMI. They raised a family and also expanded their businesses as time went on. Buck remains close to many of his brothers of Alpha Gamma Epsilon and has great stories to tell about his time here at the school.

With his success and good investments, his IRA had grown substantially over the years. Buck's tax advisors suggested that a great way to give back to Kettering University would be to make a gift of $100,000 from his IRA.

Buck: My IRA had become significant in value. My estate planning attorney said that I needed to do some "asset balancing" to avoid future tax problems and suggested that giving from my IRA was the way to go.

The benefit of this gift was that it could be made tax-free and would help to rebalance Buck's overall estate. It helped him achieve his estate planning goals and enabled him to make a major gift that qualified for his required distribution.

Buck: Shirley and I are both grateful for the wonderful education and start in life that I was able to get at GMI. This is a way for us to give back to the school and allow future generations the same opportunity that I was so fortunate to have.
The 2010 IRA charitable rollover passed the House and awaits Senate approval. It is not currently available. Because it is very likely to pass this year, we ask you to continue to plan for a potential IRA charitable rollover in the fall of 2010. To learn more click here.
