| Endowed Scholarship supported by Gift Annuities |
John E. Storer '32 died in April, 2008, but his legacy will live on at Kettering University through the John E. Storer, Jr. Endowed Scholarship.
John and wife Barbara Ann met with Sue Weiss, Director of Gift and Estate Planning at Kettering in 2007 to design the John E. Storer, Jr. Endowed Scholarship to fit John's wishes. Fortunate qualified upperclassmen in the Midwest will receive the 5% payout of this scholarship, while the corpus continues to be invested along with Kettering's other endowed funds.
In addition, John had arranged three gift annuities in recent years with Kettering so that Barbara's income would be increased for her lifetime, after which the remainder amounts would be deposited in the Storer Endowed Scholarship. This will help even more students afford their co-op education at Kettering University.
John's illustrious career began at Marvel Carburetor in 1932 after his graduation from General Motors Institute. In 1940 he joined Allison Division of General Motors, working on fighter planes and on transmissions for tanks, trucks, heavy equipment, and buses. He was Chief Design Engineer at Allison Transmission, retiring in 1971. Barbara Ann Storer and his son John generously donated John's engineering documents and memorabilia to the Kettering University Archives, where they were gratefully received.
He was known for his sense of humor, his puns, and his affectionate teasing. His inquiring and retentive mind stayed busy in retirement, active with the Scientech Club of Indianapolis that focuses on informing its members about new developments in science and engineering.
John enjoyed multiple interests, including amassing sailing trophies on his Hobie Cat, traveling the world, playing bridge, and enjoying classical music and jazz. He will live on through the John E. Storer, Jr. Endowed Scholarship, always gratefully remembered by Kettering University and its students.
